Irish interest in World Youth Day 2005
More than 1,500 young Irish people will be making the trip to Cologne
for World Youth Day from 16th - 21st August 2005. Around 700 young people
will travel to WYD with the Catholic Youth Care (CYC) pilgrimage with
other diocesan groups traveling independently.
This year’s World Youth Day event in Cologne will be attended by a
number of Irish Bishops including:
Dublin: Archbishop Diarmuid Martin, Cardinal Desmond Connell and
Bishop Raymond Field
Kildare and Leighlin: Bishop Jim Moriarty
Down and Connor: Bishop Donal McKeown
Meath: Bishop Michael Smith
Waterford and Lismore: Bishop William Lee
Raphoe: Bishop Philip Boyce
Limerick: Bishop Donal Murray
The first Irish delegation to depart for Cologne will be the group of
more than 110 young people from the dioceses of Down and Connor and
Armagh led by Bishop Donal McKeown, Auxiliary Bishop of Down and Connor,
who are traveling by ferry from Dublin to Germany and departing on
Tuesday 9th August from Dublin.
Details of Diocesan Representation at the World Youth Day
event follows:
Achonry
Three priests of the diocese, Frs. Dermot Meehan, Tomás Surlis and Michael Quinn
(Youth Ministry Director) are traveling with a group of fourteen young people
from the diocese. The Team Leaders are having an evening with the group in The
Pastoral Centre, Charelestown, Co. Mayo on August 6th.
The Achonry Diocesan Group will be hosted by the Parish of Friesoythe in the
Diocese of Munster, Germany and will be involved in all activities organised
by this Parish.
The Achonry group are flying from Dublin to Cologne on Friday August 12th.
Archdiocese of Armagh and Diocese of Down and Connor:
Bishop Donal McKeown, Auxiliary Bishop of Down and Connor will travel
to Cologne for the WYD event 2005 departing with two coaches of young
people on Tuesday August 9th.
The group comprises 71 young people from the diocese of Down and Connor
and 46 young people from the Archdiocese of Armagh. A further
20 pilgrims from Down and Connor are travelling separately from the parish
of St Mary’s on the Hill and will be staying with their twinned
parish in Dorsten-Rhade (Diocese of Munster).
A number of other Down and Connor pilgrims (including priests) will also
be traveling to Cologne.
A Commissioning ceremony for all pilgrims took place on 31st July 6pm
in St Bernard’s Church, Glengormley.
The group will depart from Belfast on the afternoon of August 9th, by coach.

Cashel and Emly:
A group of 18 young people from the Archdiocese of Cashel and Emly will
travel to Cologne for the World Youth Day event.
The group will be leaving on Sunday 14th August and travelling by land and sea
with Catholic Youth Care
Clogher
A group of 50 pilgrims are traveling from the diocese of Clogher, aged between
17 and 30, led by the Diocesan Youth Director Fr Martin O'Reilly.
The Clogher group are traveling with CYC and will depart on Sunday 14th
August.
On Sunday, 24 July a special Mass of sending took place in the diocese in St.
Macartan's Cathedral, Monaghan.
Dublin:
A group of just under 800 will be traveling on the CYC pilgrimage to World
Youth Day 2005. Almost 500 of this group are from the Archdiocese of Dublin. A
number of other dioceses are also traveling with CYC on this official trip.
Archbishop Diarmuid Martin, Cardinal Desmond Connell and Bishop Raymond Field will
travel with the CYC group to Cologne.
The group will depart from Dublin on Sunday 14th August.
Kerry
A group of 22 young people are going from the diocese of Kerry to the World Youth
Day event. On July 7th a Sending Liturgy was celebrated in the Kerry Diocesan
Youth Centre in Killarney.
The diocese is linking in with CYC and traveling by sea and land on Sunday
14th August.
Kildare and Leighlin
Bishop Jim Moriarty will be traveling to Cologne for the WYD event with 130
young people from the diocese.
The Group will gather for the 11am Mass in St. Brigid's Parish Church, Kildare
town, on Sunday 14th August, which will be celebrated by Bishop Jim Moriarty,
to mark the official start of the Kildare and Leighlin pilgrimage to WYD.
Following Mass there will be registration and refreshments in the Parish Centre
(Aras Bhride) in Kildare town.
After registration the group will board the buses and head for Dun Laoghaire.
The diocese will be participating in the general outline of events at WYD i.e.
catechesis, youth festivals, stations of the cross, opening Mass, vigil and
Papal Mass. The group are traveling by bus and boat over and back to Cologne
with CYC.
Kilmore
Kilmore Youth Ministry are sending a group of 19 young people to the World Youth
Day event. The group will depart Ireland on Monday 15th August by air and
return on the 21st August.
Limerick, Killaloe and Cork and Ross
The dioceses of Limerick, Killaloe and Cork and Ross are traveling together to
the World Youth Day event and departing on Sunday 14 August 2005 from
Limerick Diocesan Pastoral Centre to travel to Rosslare for 21.00 hrs
Irish Ferries sailing to Pembroke, followed by a night drive to Dover.
On Monday 15th August the group will travel by P&O Ferries from Dover
To Calais and drive to Dusseldorf.
The group comprises 30 young people from the diocese of Killaloe, 14 from
the diocese of Cork and Ross and 41 from Limerick diocese. The Bishop of
Limerick, Dr Donal Murray, will be traveling to Cologne for World Youth Day,
departing Ireland on Monday 15th August and returning on Monday 22nd August.
Some of the highlights from the group's itinerary are detailed below:
Tuesday 16th August
Day 3: Morning city sightseeing tour of Koln including Cathedral and House 4711.
Afternoon Opening Mass of Welcome with the Archbishop of Koln.
Thursday 18th August
Day 5: Morning Catechesis meeting. Afternoon welcoming ceremony with the
Holy Father at Frechen near Koln.
Friday 19th August
Day 6: Morning Catechesis meeting. Evening Way of the Cross.
Saturday 20th August
Assemble at official starting point for walk to Frechen. Evening vigil
with the Holy Father. Overnight sleep outdoors at Frechen.
Sunday 21st August
Concluding Mass with the Holy Father at Frechen.
Meath
Bishop Michael Smith who attended the previous WYD in Toronto is looking
forward to Cologne and is delighted that over seventy young people from the
Diocese are traveling.
Fifty five young pilgrims and three priests are flying out from
Dublin on the 10th August to partake in the Days in the Diocese.
The Meath group will be hosted by the Diocese of Hildesheim and will stay
in the parish of Lamspringe. It was to this parish church that the body of
St. Oliver Plunkett was sent for save keeping shortly after he was martyred.
It was a sister Abbey to the community at Downside in England. As part of
the canonisation celebrations the late Bishop McCormack visited this parish
so it is fitting that now the Meath group should visit it as pilgrims on
their way to Cologne. During these days the pilgrims will be hosted by
families and will experience the life, faith and culture of an ordinary
German community. Events are laid on for the visitors but the group will also
visit Bergen-Belsen concentration camp on the 11th August to mark the
sixty years since the end of the Holocaust.
On the 14th August the Meath group will depart for Cologne and take part
in the World Youth Day programme. There a group of ten from our Traveller
Community in Meath will join with the pilgrims. They depart on the 13th
August by mini-coach and ferry and are very excited about the whole event.
A special event prior to the Meath group leaving Ireland took place on
the 3rd July at Loughcrew, Oldcastle at the annual St. Oliver Plunkett

Raphoe
Bishop Philip Boyce is traveling to Cologne for the World Youth Day event
and will be leaving Dublin on 15th August with a group of 56.
This group comprises 40 young people from the diocese plus others from 5
other dioceses and some non -Irish pilgrims.
A special Mass of sending will be celebrated on August 7th in St Eunan's
Cathedral at 4.00pm.
The group will join in the main events and intends to have their own holy
hours, prayer times, pilgrimages and excursions.
The Raphoe group leaves Ireland on 15th August with Germanwings to
Cologne/Bonn airport.
Waterford and Lismore
Bishop William Lee is leading the diocesan pilgrimge to World Youth Day,
leaving Ireland on Monday 15th August, having seen off the young people
the previous day.
A group of 26 young people will officially represent Waterford and Lismore,
accompanied by six leaders including Bishop William Lee and Fr Paul F. Murphy,
the Pilgrimage Director.
The young people come from different parishes of the diocese: Waterford City,
Tramore, Dungarvan, Clonmel, Carrick on Suir and Cahir.
Some preparation meetings have already taken place in the diocese and one
further meeting is scheduled for Tuesday 9th August which will be a gathering
at the Rosminian House of Prayer, Glencomeragh, Kilsheelan, Co Tipperary between
7.15pm and 9.15pm.
The Diocese will be participating fully in the activities offered in Germany
except for one tour to Koblenz on Wednesday 17th August.
The group from the diocese will be traveling by bus and ferry and will depart
the diocese from St Joseph and St Benildus Parish Centre, Waterford City on
Sunday 14th August 2005.
Pilgrims from from Ardagh and Clonmacnois and Elphin dioceses will travel with
Waterford and Lismore.
